Reading in Kindergarten!
I love to read! I hope to foster this love of reading in the children I teach.
Elements of reading in my kindergarten program include:
A. ZooPhonics - This program introduces the children to merged letter/animal characters with letter sounds and actions. They are all introduced during the first week of the year and we continue to build on this throughout the year, culminating with a ZooPhonics Bean Bag Zoo in the Spring.
B. The Daily 5 - The 5 parts of this (new to me!) program include Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. We will get lots of reading experience and practice as we use these different components during our language arts time each day. These "Daily 5" activities are important for you to be doing with your child as well!
C Guided Reading - Children will be working with books on their own level. They will bring the "KinderReader" books home and are responsible to point and read their books and collect the names/signatures of those who listened and then return the KinderReader books back to school.
D Frye's High Frequency Words - The Kindergarten children are responsible to learn to read at least the first 25 words; they must be able to read these words in isolation. Once they master the first list, another will be given and each child may progress as far as they can!
